Overview The Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education (COMDDE) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking a Teacher of the Deaf or Speech-Language Pathologist to join the Sound Beginnings team. Sound Beginnings is located on the USU campus and is an interdisciplinary early education program serving children who are Deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), birth through Kindergarten, and their families. Approximately 50% of position responsibilities will include delivery of direct services according to program needs (e.g., classroom, individual or small group, parent coaching in parent-child therapy and/or tele-intervention) and approximately 50% will include administrative responsibilities as the Program Coordinator for Sound Beginnings. In addition to serving children and families, Sound Beginnings is the primary practicum site for graduate students in the Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) graduate training programs for Deaf Education, Speech-Language Pathology, and Audiology students. Therefore, the position will also include some administrative responsibilities in the graduate training program as connected with Sound Beginnings services. The position is full-time for 9 months during the USU academic year, plus 1 summer month (10 days to be worked in May and 11 days to be worked in July). This position is not eligible for remote work. Salary will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the person hired.
Responsibilities
Provide direct services to children who are DHH using evidence-based LSL strategies. This could include classroom or small group instruction, individual or parent-child therapy, and/or tele-intervention.
Participate in educational programming meetings, administer assessments, write goals and objectives, monitor child progress, and complete applicable paperwork.
Provide Program Coordinator responsibilities, such as parent communications, assessment and curriculum oversight, management of work study teacher assistants, and other administrative activities.
Provide supervision and mentoring to graduate students in the LSL graduate training program, including various practicum oversight responsibilities.
Collaborate with parents, COMDDE and Sound Beginnings interdisciplinary teams, related services professionals, and area school district representatives.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Deaf Education, Speech-Language Pathology, or related field.
Two or more years working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing in programs that emphasize the development of listening and spoken language.
Eligible and willing to work toward LSLS Cert. AVT or LSLS Cert. AVEd if not already certified.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Basic computer skills, including knowledge of word processing and spread sheets.
Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications:
LSLS Certification AVT or LSLS Certification AVEd.
Management experience in a LSL early education program.
Graduate student supervisory experience.
Experience delivering family-centered services using tele-intervention.
Bilingual (Spanish and English).
