The Alliance for Disease Prevention and Response (Alliance), in conjunction with the American Public Health Association(APHA) is seeking a graduate assistant. The Alliance for Disease Prevention and Response Coordinator will support the work the Alliance generally, and specifically will focus on two projects - one funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) working to protect the authority of states to act to protect the public’s health and one supporting the new Public Health AmeriCorps (PHAC) program’s members and host organizations to be better integrated into the field of public health. These projects will require collaboration and engaging with staff and leaders both internal and external to APHA. The RWJF project involves working closely with other funded partners including Act for Public Health - a coalition of public health law partners, the American Heart Association’s Voices for Healthy Kids initiative and the Local Solutions Support Center. We work with these partners to provide technical assistance to our members and state affiliates (state public health associations) to support their efforts to advance public health and protect public health authority and the ability for public health entities to act. The PHAC project is focused on engaging these participants better in the field of public health and bringing a select group of them to APHA’s 2023 annual meeting which will be held in November in Atlanta, GA. This is a temporary grant funded position designed to run through December 2023.
The Alliance for Disease Preventions and Response Coordinator will support the various aspects of the projects including the provision of technical assistance, coordination with partners, planning and outreach. Duties includes Supporting the planning, coordinating and execution of activities of the Alliance including monthly meetings, disseminating materials, and developing webinars and trainings for both projects. Assisting with coordination of technical assistance and events with partners. Developing some content including resources, webpages, toolkits, slides and fact sheets. Disseminating resources through social media and other means. Assisting staff in planning meetings, summarizing meeting discussions and some note taking. Supporting activities such as environmental scan for potential partners and existing initiatives. Assisting with national and state-level efforts to create communications campaigns and resources. Supporting the identification and development of networking and training opportunities for AmeriCorps members and host organizations. These will include using and adapting existing Alliance tools such as PHERN (the Public Health & Equity Resource Navigator) and the related Network Map.
The Alliance for Disease Prevention and Response Coordinator is passionate about public health and brings the following qualifications: In graduate school for public health or related subject Health equity is central to their public health work. Role will require organizational and project management skills and an ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. The Alliance generally and these projects specifically require working closely and diplomatically with a variety of partners and organizations with various goals and perspectives. Strong communications skills including written and oral and social media are required, and experience with graphic design and websites preferred. The role may require some evening/weekend work and travel leading into and during the APHA Annual Meeting.
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hybrid work environment.
Hours: Part-time, Monday – Friday, 15-19 hrs./week (no benefits). Number of openings: 1.
